#19 Chile

Patagonia, located at the southern end of South America, is a destination that has captured the hearts of adventurers, hikers, and nature lovers alike. With its towering mountains, sparkling glaciers, pristine lakes, and vast expanses of wilderness, Patagonia is a land of breathtaking beauty and endless possibilities.

In Chile, one of the must-see destinations is Torres del Paine National Park, with its towering granite peaks, glaciers, and turquoise lakes. The park is a hiker's paradise, with trails ranging from leisurely strolls to challenging multi-day treks. We hiked Mirador Las Torres . The hike to the viewpoint is one of the best hikes in Patagonia and one of the most challenging day hikes in the park. The hike is about 19 kilometers (12 miles), and has an elevation gain of around 900 meters (3,000 feet).

Patagonia is a destination that should be on every traveler's bucket list. With its stunning natural beauty, vast wilderness areas, and endless outdoor activities, it's a place that will stay with you long after you return home. It is also a great place to go with friends. So pack your bags, lace up your hiking boots, and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime!

During our trip, we took a boat ride to Glacier Grey. The boat took us close to the glacier, allowing us to appreciate its sheer size and beauty. We were lucky enough to witness ice calving, which is when chunks of ice break off and fall into the water. We had stunning views of the glacier and its surroundings. We witnessed the different shades of blue and white in the ice, heard the sounds of the glacier cracking and moving, and felt the cold air blowing from the ice. It was nothing I would have ever imagined.

The first time I ever saw penguins at Isla Magdalena was an incredible experience. The island is located in the Strait of Magellan, off the southern coast of Chile. It is home to a large colony of Magellanic penguins, known for their distinctive black and white markings and adorable waddling walk.

As I stepped off the boat onto the island, I could immediately hear the distinctive calls of the penguins. The air was filled with the sound of their braying and honking, creating a cacophony of overwhelming and exhilarating noise. As I made my way through the rocky terrain toward the penguin colony, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and wonder. The penguins were everywhere, waddling and sliding along the ground, diving into the water, and swimming gracefully through the waves.

The closer I got to the colony, the more I could see the individual personalities of the penguins. Some were more curious than others, coming right up to me to investigate before waddling away. Others seemed to be more shy, watching me from a distance before disappearing into their burrows.

One of the most amazing things about the penguins was how unafraid they were of humans. They went about their daily routines, seemingly oblivious to the groups of tourists watching them. I felt incredibly lucky to be able to witness these creatures in their natural habitat, and it was clear that the experience was one that I would never forget.

As I made my way back to the boat, I felt a sense of gratitude for seeing such amazing animals up close. The penguins had captured my heart with their adorable antics, and I knew I would always treasure the memory of my first encounter with them at Isla Magdalena.

This trip was a perfect start to Antarctica and a great way to end my 32nd year around the sun.

Until next time…
