Goal Setting for 2021

It is never too late to set goals. Change can start today - and consistency can set you on a path of unrealized potential. Although sometimes it seems like we are conditioned to make goals at the beginning of each new year, we should be crushing and shaping our goals all year long and have them transition into the new year.

Goals keep us focused. Imagine shooting an arrow, without a target. Where would you aim? What is the point of the arrow without the target? Same goes for your goals. If there is not a focus to your goals, it is a waste of time and effort. Goals give you the direction you need in your life.

One of the biggest reasons New Year’s Resolutions fizzle out is because people are not specific. When your goals are specific and have many detailed steps to complete, they are more difficult to quit. Create short term, medium term, and long term goals that coincide together. 30, 60, and 90 day goals can be a great way to start, and this helps overcome procrastination. It also allows you to track and measure the progress. Just make sure the goals are building on each other so they can transition more easily into your bigger goals.

You don’t have the motivation or there is a lack thereof? You aren’t the only one, and that’s okay. Your goals should be something you are excited about. Try to remember why you came up with the goal to being with. If your end goal excites you, the mini steps along the way should also excite you. Celebrate those mini wins and focus your energy in positive directions. Accountability accelerates your performance by creating consistent progress.

Goal setting also doesn’t always have to be a solo activity. Initially, Michael and I booked an AirBnB tucked in the mountains of Wales for several nights to have our goal setting retreat but with the new lockdown restrictions we will have to complete it at home.

Here is our tentative schedule, which can be done over any weekend.

- Night before Day 1: Enjoy a relaxed evening over dinner.
- Day 1 Morning: Review net worth. Review last year's goals. Review budget.
- Lunch break: go for a walk together
- Day 1 Afternoon: Spend all afternoon setting goals for the coming year. Pay attention to each other's goals, where they align and don't align
- Day 1 Evening: Put the goals on the back burner and let them simmer while enjoying dinner and relaxing.
- Day 2 Morning: Spend the morning adjusting and refining goals after letting them simmer all night.
- Lunch break: go for a walk together.
- Day 2 Afternoon: Finish goal setting, time block vacations, and put together vision board.
- Day 2 Evening: Enjoy dinner together!

GOAL SETTING RETREAT COMPLETE!

If you are interested in following the same outline we did, you can find it here. There is also an option for doing this all in 1 day. Give yourself the time you need that creates the least amount of stress.

What are some goals you want to accomplish in the near future or during 2021? We would love to know. We can also be an accountability partner for you. Send us your goals so we can check in with you!

Until next time…
